These CATs work with or within Microsoft Word. This approach has 2 main advantages:
- Word is a familiar environment for most, making it very simple for the user.
- Word is a very good Word processor with a large range of useful functions.
Still not everyone likes it. If that's your case, I recommend having a look at the various "standalone CATs" available on the market.
Please note that prices are given "for information only". I do not own or sell these software, so make sure you get the latest data from the relevant companies by checking directly on their websites. There are often promos of some sort on SDL Trados.

Wordfast is my personnal favorite, hands down. Wordfast is a fully fledged CAT, with translation memory, 3 glossaries, real-time quality check, macro integration, context search, concordancer and a lot more. Since all its file formats are open, you can do just about anything you want. Your terminology is not stuck into a proprietary format. Check the tutorial & review section for more information. Another note-worthy comment is that the demo version allows extensive trial, so you get the chance to actually work with it before you decide if you should buy it or not. Wordfast segmented files have a native compatibility with Trados.

Long considered *the* industry standard, Trados pioneered a number of tools and functions. It still remains a very effective translation tool with a full panel of functions. Its document preparation tools have made it quite popular for translation agencies. On the downside, it is a little pricey, bloated (90Mb) and its formats are proprietary, which means you have to upgrade quite regularly to stay current. Nevertheless, Trados remains a good CAT tool. Trados is now sold together with SDLX, a standalone CAT. "Best of both worlds", or so they say. Either case, it's definitely worth considering.
Metatexis is another wordbased CAT tool. Can handle Trados segmented files and is quite cheap. Can't say much about it - has been ages I haven't checked it out. Will try it again and write up something better when I get some time.
Please contact me if you wish to suggest an other CAT tool in this section.
