Stand-alone CATS

These CATs have their own translation interface and were made specifically for translation purposes, so it's all down to the software. Some are quite good, other less so. I will not "name names", but as a rule of thumb, the more hype you can find on the website, the less actual fonctions are available. Catch phrases like "next generation" are strictly meaningless. My advice is "If you can't try it, don't buy it".

Please note that prices are given "for information only". I do not own or sell these software, so make sure you get the latest data from the relevant companies by checking directly on their websites. There are often promos.

SDLX
Editor Rating: 8/10 - Recommended!
User Rating: 6/10 (13 votes)

Now sold as "SDL Trados" (Trados and SDLX bundled together - SDL acquired Trados some while ago), SDLX is a comprehensive tool allowing to translate a large gamut of formats in a table format (typically source text on the left and target text on the right). SDLX enjoys a good repute on its own right, and combined with Trados, the product offering is certainly worth considering. Worth noting, there is a free SDLX lite module allowing freelance translators to work of SDLX prepared projects. (Can't be used to work on documents directly, only on SDLX projects, so unless your customer prepares projects for you, it is useless)

Star Transit XV
Editor Rating: 7/10 - Recommended!
User Rating: 4/10 (7 votes)

Another major player, Transit provide a no-nonsense integrated environment with a large range of filters for a fair number of formats. Like SDLX, it offers a "Satellite version" for free with limited functionalities, to enable translators to deal with Transit created projects.

Déjà Vu X
Editor Rating: none
User Rating: 7/10 (10 votes)

Atril's Déjà Vu is an integrated environment (table style, 2 columns - source & target) with a good following. Can't say much about it since I hardly ever used it, but it looks like a comprehensive tool as well, and it can handle Trados files as well. On the other end, you need DV to work with DV files.

OmegaT
Editor Rating: 5/10
User Rating: 7/10 (13 votes)

OmegaT is a free CAT, based on Java technology - meaning plateform independant. You can find a complete review in the tutorial section on this site. If you are new to the whole CAT game, it has the advantage of being free and easy to use. On the other end, it still has to catch up with other CATs and lacks a number of functions.
