Document preparation & TM management
The translation process often requires more than just translation. Files may need to be prepared for translation (tagged), TM and glossaries must be made and managed, terminology extracted...
Tools in this section will assist you in some of these tasks. Many -not all- are freeware.

Standalone program, running under Windows. I use Rainbow 3 mostly to prepare HTML document for translation with Wordfast and it does a very neat job at that. Fast, simple, to the point. However, Rainbow can do a lot more than that if you need it too, like encoding management, conversion of text files (Windows, Mac and Unix have slightly different ways to create text files. If you get a Mac text file, you can use Rainbow to convert it), XML validation... Newer versions also handle the preparation of XML files and more. Go to the website for more details.

PlusTools is a word macro, which means it runs fully in Word. It covers a large range of file handling functions including: Find and replace over multiple files using Ms Word powerful find and replace functions, convert files into different text formats (and batch replace the extension), import the text from a PDF file into Word and attempt to recover the layout (not perfect, but usually pretty good), track translation changes on segmented files, edit the shortcuts of any add-on installed in Word, align source and target files to create a TM, extract terminology from files, and prepare files for translation (HTML, resource files, entities conversion and custom tags). All in all, an handy bit of software to have up your sleeves.
TM managment software. Requires .Net framework to run. Can handle huge TMs (works smoothly with several million words)in different formats and perform all sorts of maintenance action such as dealing with duplicates, combine or split TMs using SQL queries.
According to the developper, "Tortoise tagger is a Word template which can read text strings and commands from a taglist created by the user and tag the text in the document accordingly. Tortoise Tagger is freeware, the program code contains many comments making it possible for a VBA newbie to understand the tagger's mechanics". Spot on. An excellent program that allows you to prepare and work with many kinds of formats, including inDesign, Quark, FrameMaker, LaTex... and whatever else you customize it for.
Does a number of neat tricks like converting Transit or TagEditor files into a Trados/Wordfast segmented RTF. Doesn't always work, however, so you should make sure you know what you are doing before you use it professionally.
